Basketball standout Butts commits to Mississippi State

Senior guard had offers from several major colleges

Stratford’s basketball season has not even started, but senior Devin Butts is already making plans for next season.

Devin, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard, has made a verbal commitment to Mississippi State.

As a junior, he was an all-region selection, averaging 16 points, five rebounds, and two assists per  game.

“He was the sixth man on JV as a freshman and came to being our leading scorer two years later,” Head Basketball Coach Sean Sweeney said.

Devin had offers from major schools such as Mississippi State, Wichita State, South Florida, Georgia State, and Ole Miss.

He said Mississippi State’s environment stood out.

“It has always been my dream to play SEC basketball,” he said.

“I think he’ll do very well when he gets to college based off of his work ethic at Stratford,” Coach Sweeney said.

Devin is excited for his senior season with the Eagles. He said it will be his second year as captain while he sets the tone by his “daily actions and routine, getting extra shots up, and mentoring younger players as a leader.”
