Where there’s a wheel, there’s a way

Coach Kate Blankenship cruises campus on her One Wheel

What’s the quickest way to get from the soccer field to The Grady?

Run? Fly? Call an Uber?

If you’re Varsity Girls Soccer Coach Kate Blankenship, you hop on your One-Wheel.

Coach Kate purchased the popular riding device, which is similar to a hoverboard, last spring after her snowboarding vacation to Canada was cancelled because of the pandemic.

She called the One-Wheel, which retails for about $950-1800, “an awesome device and cool technology.’’

Reaching speeds of 16-18 miles per hour, the One-Wheel connects to your phone or apple watch to log rides, your speed, or connect with other One-Wheelers in your area. The device also includes four different riding styles to control the speed or turns and can come with customized accessories.

She uses the One-Wheel for transportation around the school campus, zooming from lunch duty up to her office at the soccer facilities. Coach Kate also enjoys riding it in her neighborhood and trips. She has taken it to the St Simons Island beaches and Durhamtown where she rides dirt bikes with her brother and nephew.

Helping her get from one place to another much quicker and more fun.

“I have only had one bad crash, the others were stumbles,’’ she said. “I have a lot of fun with it, but it is something you would have concerns about with injuries.”

Overall, she rates it a 10 out of 10 and recommends the One-Wheel to those who are capable of riding it without getting injured.
