There’s gold in those Eagles

Stratford seniors Michelle Tang and Thomas Slocumb took home Golden Eagle awards last week at the Telegraph’s 39th Annual Golden Eagles Awards Ceremony at the Grand Opera House.

Tang, who is also Stratford’s valedictorian, received the distinction in Science. Slocumb, who speaks seven other languages, was the winner in the Foreign Language division. Each received a $1,000 scholarship.

Senior Dylan Ogle was honorable mention in the Technology category. He received a $300 scholarship.

There were 12 categories. Other nominees from Stratford were Ann Thompson (Art),  Mary Wilson Avant (athletics), Jaedyn Ellis (citizenship), Ally Parker (drama), Savannah Joyner (English/literature), Libby Ellison (journalism), Shishir Bandy (mathematics) and Victoria Brown (music).

Students were chosen to represent their school based on their achievements, leaderships and character. The nominees were interviewed by a panel of judges in March.

In addition to the student recognition, Mike Kelley, chairman of Stratford’s U.S. History department, was one of five area teachers recognized in the first Education Together Teacher Awards. Kelley received $1,000 to purchase supplies and educational materials.
