Griffin and Patel Raise Typhoon Awareness

The Global and Community Awareness Club makes it a point to keep the student body informed of important world events. Two of its members, freshmen Deep Patel and Justin Griffin, were concerned about Typhoon Haiyan that devastated the Philippines in November 2013.

”It was the worst typhoon to ever hit land and caused a lot of destruction,” said history teacher and club advisor Mr. Mike Kelley. The storm left behind a death toll of 6,201 people, which is still growing as victims continue to be discovered.

Patel and Griffin proposed a fundraiser to help raise awareness as well as funds for the typhoon victims. The week of January 13th students donated three dollars which allowed them to wear jeans for three days. During break on those days, the club also sold doughnuts and hot chocolate during break.

The club beat their goal of $2,000, raising $2,100.
